The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a program run by the South African government to help students from low income families afford higher education. It started in 1991 as the Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa (TEFSA) and was later renamed NSFAS in 1999. Over the years, it has grown to support even more students and has become a key part of making education accessible in South Africa.

NSFAS is managed by the Department of Higher Education and Training. Since its creation, it has provided billions of rands to students who qualify.
