Privacy Policy
Effective date: 11 October 2026
This privacy policy applies to sassagrantcheck.co.za (“SASSA Grant Check”, “we”, “us” or “our”). It explains what information we collect when you visit our website, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the choices you have. SASSA Grant Check is an independent information website and is not connected to SASSA, so we have no access to your SASSA records. We respect your privacy and follow South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
What We Don’t Collect
We never ask for, collect or store your South African ID number, SASSA application details, grant status, banking details, PIN or OTP. Our website doesn’t have any form for checking your grant status, applying for a grant or updating your SASSA details. When you need to do any of those things, our guides send you to SASSA’s official websites, srd.sassa.gov.za and sassa.gov.za, where you enter your details directly with SASSA. Please never post your ID number, phone number or banking details in our comments either.
Information Collection and Use
We only collect the information we need to run our website, reply to you, and keep the site free with advertising. Here’s what that includes:
Types of Data Collected
- Comments: If you leave a comment, we collect the name and email address you enter, your comment, and basic technical data such as your IP address and browser, which help us stop spam. Your email address is never published.
- Emails You Send Us: If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and anything you choose to include. We use this only to reply to you.
- Usage Data: When you visit our website, we automatically collect information such as the pages you view, how long you stay, your device type, browser, approximate location (country or city), and how you arrived on our site. This information doesn’t identify you by name.
- Tracking & Cookies Data: We use cookies and similar technologies for analytics, advertising and basic site features. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and most of our website will still work.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our website, such as which guides are read the most and which pages need improving. Google Analytics uses cookies to collect usage data on our behalf. This data is grouped together and doesn’t tell us who you are. You can learn how Google uses this information at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and you can opt out by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
How We Use Your Information
- To run, maintain and improve our website and guides
- To understand which guides are most useful, using Google Analytics
- To reply to emails and messages you send us
- To display and moderate comments on our guides
- To detect and prevent spam, abuse and technical issues
- To let you know about important changes to this website or policy
- To keep our website secure for everyone who visits
- To display ads through Google AdSense, which help keep our website free
- To measure how ads perform and improve where they appear on our pages
Data Retention
We don’t collect ID numbers, phone numbers or SASSA details, so there’s nothing of that kind for us to keep. Comments stay published until they’re removed, and the details linked to them are kept for as long as the comment is on our website. Emails are kept only as long as we need them to reply to you. Analytics data is kept according to our Google Analytics data retention settings, after which it’s deleted automatically.
User Rights
Under POPIA, you have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to how we use it. For example, you can ask us to remove a comment you posted along with your name and email address. To make a request, please contact us and we’ll respond as soon as we can. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with South Africa’s Information Regulator.
Embedded Content from Other Websites
Some of our guides include embedded content from other websites, such as YouTube videos or social media posts. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other website. Those websites may collect data about you, use cookies, and track your interaction with the embedded content, according to their own privacy policies.
Google DoubleClick DART Cookie
Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies, including the DoubleClick (DART) cookie, to serve ads on our website based on your visits to this and other websites on the internet. You can turn off personalised advertising at any time in Google’s Ad Settings (adssettings.google.com), and you can learn more about how Google uses information from websites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
Compliance with South Africa’s POPIA
We process personal information in line with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). That means we only collect what we need, use it only for the purposes explained in this policy, keep it secure, and don’t keep it for longer than necessary. We never sell your personal information to anyone.
Third-Party Advertisements
We work with Google AdSense and its advertising partners to show ads on our website. These companies may use cookies and similar technologies to show ads that are relevant to you and to measure how well those ads perform. We don’t control these cookies, and their use is covered by the advertisers’ own privacy policies. An ad on our website isn’t an endorsement. SASSA grants are always free, so please ignore any ad that asks for money to speed up or guarantee a grant.
Children’s Online Privacy
Our website is meant for adults looking for information about South African social grants. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has shared personal information with us, for example in a comment, please contact us and we’ll remove it.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time, for example when we change the tools we use or when the law changes. Any changes will be posted on this page with a new effective date at the top, so it’s a good idea to check back now and then.
