Likewise, every individual who suffers from a disability in South Africa struggles with financial difficulties. But do not lose hope, as there are governmental grants to help you. One example of such a scheme is the SASSA Disability Grant.

A lot of disabled people register for this grant annually, but unfortunately, a large number of applications are rejected due to not meeting the eligibility requirements. What is the SASSA Disability Grant?

SASSA introduced this grant for those who are mentally or physically disabled and unable to do work and earn money. The government provides a permanent grant if your disability is longer than a year. However, you get temporary payments for temporary disabilities.

What are the Eligibility Criteria for the Grant?

Like other social grants, disability allowances are also not for every person. Who qualifies for SASSA disability grant depends upon the qualification requirements to receive money.

  • The applicant must be a citizen of South Africa, a permanent resident, or a refugee.
  • Have to live in the Republic.
  • The age must be between 18-59 years.
  • Submit a report to confirm the disability medically.
  • The medical assessment report should not be older than 3 months at the date of application.
  • You and your spouse have to meet the requirements of the means test.
  • Must not be looked after or maintained by the state institution. 
  • Must not get another social grant for yourself. 
  • You can apply for this if your disability makes you unfit for a period longer than 6 months.

Note: Remember, If you are disabled, under 18, and need permanent care, then your primary caregiver will apply for a Care Dependency Grant.

Means Test Criteria

  1. Income: If you are single, you must not earn more than R101,640 and if you are married, then R203,280.
  2. Assets: The single person must not have assets worth more than R1,438,800 or R2,877,600 if you are married.

How to Apply for Disability Grant?

Before you start the application procedure of this grant you must be accessed by a medical practitioner recognized by the government confirming your impairment. Your medical assessment will determine whether the grant is provided temporarily or permanently. A final decision will be made by SASSA on whether you qualify for grant or not.

Once you are done with the medical assessment, you can begin the process of this social grant application. You cannot apply online as the government does not offer an online portal for impairment grants.   • Apply to the SASSA office nearest to you.
  • A family member or a friend can go on your behalf if you are too sick or too old. 
  • Complete your application form in the presence of a government officer. 
  • After completing the form, get the receipt.
  • Keep this receipt. It is the proof that you have applied.

Note: Complete an affidavit in standard SASSA format in the presence of a commissioner of oaths who is not an officer of SASSA.

Documents Needed to Apply for disability SASSA grant

You are required to present the following documents when applying for financial aid:

  • 13-digit-bar-coded ID
  • A sworn statement signed by a reputable person verifying your name and age
  • Provide fingerprints to the officials
  • Medical report and functional assessment report by a doctor
  • Proof of Marital status
  • Residence proof
  • Proof of income and assets including municipal value of property
  • Proof of your private pension if any
  • Bank statement for the past 3 months
  • 13-digit refugee ID and refugee status permit.
  • Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) document (‘blue book’) or discharge certificate from the previous employer.
  • If your spouse died within the last five years, a copy of the will and the first and final liquidation and distribution accounts.

Note: If you do not have an ID, you must complete an affidavit provided to you. Provide proof that you have applied for the document from the Department of Home Affairs. Apply for the ID within three months of applying for the grant if you have not applied before. 

How Much is Disability Grant Amount 2024?

SASSA announced that the grant will increase by R20 in October 2024. From October 2024, the amount of this grant will be 2,190 per month.

Grant Reviews

You must provide the essential documents during the grant reviews; otherwise, it will be suspended. SASSA will contact you before 3 months of the date of review in writing and indicate the place and date. You will be given a receipt of compliance after the completion of the process. Why does the government conduct a review?

  • To check whether you are still alive and in the country
  • Your circumstances have not changed 
  • To check the expiry of refugee status
  • If the aid was approved in error
  • You are not admitted to an institution funded by the government 
  • If the aid is not claimed for 3 months consecutively
  • The period of temporary disability expires.

FAQs

A permanent grant doesn’t mean you receive the grant for life but it will be continued for more than a year.

The normal duration period for grant approval is 2-3 months.

If your application is not approved, SASSA will notify you in writing. You can request a reconsideration of the decision. If the outcome is still unfavorable, you can lodge appeal to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days of being informed.

Do not search for the SASSA disability grant status check online. You will get a written letter from the SASSA stating the approval or disapproval of your grant.
