What is the SASSA Disability Grant?
SASSA introduced this grant for those who are mentally or physically disabled and unable to do work and earn money. The government provides a permanent grant if your disability is longer than a year. However, you get temporary payments for temporary disabilities.
What are the Eligibility Criteria for the Grant?
Like other social grants, disability allowances are also not for every person. Who qualifies for SASSA disability grant depends upon the qualification requirements to receive money.
Note: Remember, If you are disabled, under 18, and need permanent care, then your primary caregiver will apply for a Care Dependency Grant.
Means Test Criteria
- Income: If you are single, you must not earn more than R101,640 and if you are married, then R203,280.
- Assets: The single person must not have assets worth more than R1,438,800 or R2,877,600 if you are married.
How to Apply for Disability Grant?
Before you start the application procedure of this grant you must be accessed by a medical practitioner recognized by the government confirming your impairment. Your medical assessment will determine whether the grant is provided temporarily or permanently. A final decision will be made by SASSA on whether you qualify for grant or not.
Once you are done with the medical assessment, you can begin the process of this social grant application. You cannot apply online as the government does not offer an online portal for impairment grants. SASSA announced that the grant will increase by R20 in October 2024. From October 2024, the amount of this grant will be 2,190 per month.
